Sriranjani

A panchama varjya janya of Kharaharapriya.

Sriranjani is one of the important janyas of the 22nd melakarta Kharaharapriya and a raga that ranks high in aesthetic value. It excludes the panchama, or the swara 'pa', and is therefore a "panchama varjya" raga. Two ragas which are very close to Sriranjani in terms of the scale are Abhogi and Jayamanohari. Sriranjani has an endearing quality and is quite straightforward in terms of its usages. The raga has been mentioned in the ancient treatise Sangeetha Saramrita. With numerous compositions from composers like Tyagaraja and Papanasam Sivan, the raga is etched firmly in the musical landscape of Carnatic music. This programme carries information on various facets of the raga and showcases different compositions in it.
