Subbudu

A tribute to the famous music and dance critic in connection with his birth anniversary on March 27.

It was believed that Subbudu's reviews could make or break an artiste's career. Coupled with his fearlessness and caustic wit, his reviews were feared by most artists. Subbudu would criticize established musicians like Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer - he once commented that the dreaded emergency had ended, but there seemed to be no end to Semmangudi - but at the same time, was very encouraging of young artists like U Srinivas and Bombay Jayashri. In fact, in 1989, Subbudu dared Srinivas’s competitors to play like him, saying he would shave his head if anyone could better the music genius. Such was Subbudu's reputation that during the Music Season of 1979, V S Manian, the editor of a leading Tamil magazine, put up a poster outside the Madras Music Academy, proclaiming "Artistes, beware! Subbudu is in town", depicting an artiste as a ghatam and Subbudu as a ghatam player.

Apart from being a critic, Subbudu was a reasonably accomplished musician. He accompanied many singers on the harmonium and keyboard, for concerts and bhajan sessions. On this feature, we present some renditions by H Ramakrishnan, where he is accompanied by Subbudu on the harmonium.
