Suguna Purushothaman

An hour of music by the senior musician and guru.

Suguna Purushottaman was one of the most highly respected musicians and teachers in Carnatic music. A stalwart of five decades of concert experience, Suguna Purushottaman was both classically aesthetic and technically adept. She honed her skills over years from masters such as Musiri Subramania Iyer and Tinniyam Venkatrama Iyer. Suguna Purushottaman was adept at the Avadhaana Pallavi, where one sings a pallavi to two talas simultaneously. She was one of the few musicians to have sung a full-fledged pallavi in the complex Simhanandana Tala. Apart from her reputation as a vocal musician, Suguna Purushottaman was also a sought-after teacher. A less-known facet is that she was also accomplished in playing the veena.
