Swathi Thirunal

A selection from the royal composer of Travancore in connection with his birth anniversary on April 16.

Swathi Thirunal, the royal composer of Travancore, was a younger contemporary of the Trinity, and his musical output consists of a wide variety of compositions, including kritis, keertanas, varnams, tillanas, bhajans, padams, javalis, and pieces in Hindustani music. His compositions covered a range that not many composers of his time could boast of. From the standard Carnatic music compositions to Tappas and Khayals, his compositions are a pleasure to learn and also to listen. He also composed his songs in a variety of languages, from Sanskrit, Manipravalam and Telugu to Hindi and Kannada. Apart from numerous songs dedicated to Lord Padmanabha of the temple at Thiruvananthapuram, Swati Tirunal composed Navavidha Bhakti kritis, Utsava Prabandha songs, Navaratri Kritis and upakhyanams. He also composed on deities of other temples. On this feature, we present various types of compositions of Swathi Thirunal.
