Swathi Thirunal

A selection of compositions of the royal composer in connection with his birth anniversary on April 16.

Swathi Thirunal was the maharaja of Travancore and lived only for 33 years (April 16, 1813 – December 25, 1846) but what he accomplished in that time was quite remarkable. His prolific output includes about 400 songs in Carnatic music which span a range of compositions and many songs in Hindustani music too. He also composed his songs in a variety of languages, from Sanskrit, Manipravalam and Telugu to Hindi and Kannada. This programme plays a selection that includes some lesser known compositions.
