T Brinda

A selection of renditions by the master musician in connection with her death anniversary on August 6.

T Brinda had a remarkable career spanning seven decades. Grand-daughter of the legendary vainika, Dhanammal, Brinda imbibed the soft and graceful style of Dhanammal's music and also the bold style of her guru, Naina Pillai. She was renowned for her vast repertoire and was also one of the first musicians to modulate her voice to make it sharper when she sang fast phrases in higher octaves, and deeper, when she sang in the lower octaves. Brinda came to be associated with padams of Kshetragna, Sarangapani, Ghanam Krishna Iyer and others, due to her ability to highlight the long, plain notes with her tranquil voice. She could also effortlessly handle fast-paced pieces and even sang songs like Pakkala nilabadi (Kharaharapriya) or Epapamu (Atana) in speeds faster than what was conventional. T Brinda inspired several up-coming and established musicians, who went on to learn from her.
