Tanjore Upendran

A tribute to the mridangam maestro in connection with his birth anniversary on November 6.

Thanjavur Upendran trained under Thanjavur Mahalingam Pillai, Raghava Rao and Rajam Iyer. He also had the proud privilege of having the maestro, Palghat Mani Iyer, as his guru. His style of accompaniment was very sensitive, and he was always quick to adjust his approach to that of the main artiste. As a result, he was very popular with veena artistes.

Thanjavur Upendran was perhaps was the only mridangam vidwan to incorporate tavil kannaku and other aspects in his style. He was influenced in this by his father-in-law, the legendary tavil vidwan Valangaiman Shanmughasundaram Pillai. The tavil influence could be seen in his sollus based on meetu strokes to mimic the sound of the tavil, as well as the development of sankeerna nadai.

Tanjore Upendran is also remembered for his generosity and willingness to encourage other musicians. He encouraged young U Srinivas by playing with him for several concerts, and also recommending him for programmes when he had just emerged on the Carnatic music stage as a young prodigy.
