Thanjavur Sankara Iyer, a nonagenarian musician is a teacher and composer of great merit. He is described as a musician's musician for his refined music sensibilities and knowledge. He was born on January 14, 1924, in the village Togamarai, in Tiruchi district. His music learnings were from many gurus, including Sattur Krishna Iyengar and Tiger Varadachariar. His music carries a rare quality wherein the essence of the piece comes to the fore. This depth in his music has been an inspiration to many of today’s leading artistes. Thanjavur Sankara Iyer is also one of the important vaggeyakaras of our times, with about 75 compositions to his credit, and many of his compositions are heard frequently on the concert stage. This programme includes his very first composition which is in raga Desh.
