Trinity

Compositions by the Trinity dedicated to deities at specific temples.

With almost all compositions in Carnatic music being devotional in nature, it is perhaps to be expected that some of them would be composed on specific temples and on specific deities at temples. Kshetra kritis have a special significance in Carnatic music. They may not necessarily read like a travel guide but the way they have been composed and the bhakti element associated with them may prompt the listener to appreciate the kshetra and its grandeur musically.

While most of the compositions of someone like Tyagaraja are essentially based on his personal interaction with God, Muthuswami Dikshitar is an example of a composer who wrote dozens of compositions on specific temples or deities, with intricate details about the qualities and history of the temple and the deity. This episode features kshetra kritis by Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri.
