Trinity

Songs of the three foremost composers - Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri.

This theme is a regular feature where we examine aspects of the compositions of the trinity of Carnatic music. They refer to the trio of composers, Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri who have made an outstanding contribution. Each has incorporated a mudra or signature which helps us identify their compositions. When a composer includes his or her own name as a signature, it is called a vaggeyakara mudra. Among the trinity, there are interesting associations of their mudras with their life stories and we take a look at these through a well known composition of Tyagaraja, a Dikshitar composition that incorporates an unusual mudra and two compositions in rare ragas for Syama Sastri.
