Trinity - Laya

Examples of the Trinity's use of laya, the underlying rhythmic principle in a composition.

The outstanding contribution of the trinity – composers Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri – forms the bedrock of Carnatic music. A certain grandeur, even if it is a subtle, is an experience a listener automatically feels on listening to their compositions. The sophistication in terms of the raga and tala structure may not always be apparent. This is particularly true of the laya aspect, which is the underlying rhythmic principle that operates in a composition. This programme looks at the eduppu aspect – or the position in the tala cycle where the composition begins – which is one of the important aspects pertaining to laya.
