Trinity - Vivadi Ragas

Selected songs of the trinity in vivadi ragas.

The swaras Shatshruthi Rishaba, Shuddha Gandhara, Shatsruthi Dhaivata and Shuddha Nishada are considered as vivadi notes and the ragas which have any of these notes are called Vivadi Ragas. There are a total of 72 melakarta ragas, out of which 40 are vivadi in nature. Traditionally, these ragas were avoided as being unsuitable to aesthetic expression. Syama Shastri composed mainly in rakti ragas, but he also used ragas like Varali and Nata. Tyagaraja made use of several vivadi melakarta and janya ragas. The Asampoorna melakarta system, which Muthuswami Dikshitar followed, addresses the vivadi issue by omitting vivadi swaras in either arohana or avarohana, or by using vakra sancharas to change the order of notes. This feature presents selected kritis of the trinity in vivadi ragas.
