Tyagaraja
One hour of a few of Tyagaraja's well known compositions.
Tyagaraja is by far the most important and influential composer in Carnatic music. He is said to have composed thousands of songs, though only 700-odd are extant. In musical range, Tyagaraja's expression leaves very little to be said. It is no wonder that so many of Tyagaraja's compositions are popular among both musicians and listeners, with their easy musicality and lyrical content that virtually anyone can relate to. Apart from exploring the classical ragas from all possible angles, Tyagaraja also brought into the limelight many ragas that were not often used. There are further dozens of ragas that are known primarily through Tyagaraja's songs. In fact, many ragas such as Bindumalini and Devamritavarshini are known only through the one Tyagaraja kriti that is available in them - Enta Muddu and Evarani, respectively. This programme features a few of Tyagaraja's compositions that have become widely known through performances over long years.
